2017 Reading Challenges!

As the end of 2016 draws to a close, I have totally slacked off on my reading.  Instead, I have been spending a lot of time playing games on my iPad, making the same lists over and over again, obsessively checking if our Christmas tree needs water, wandering around Target for embarrassing chunks of time, and basically not reading.  This is not really
challengessomething an avid bookworm likes to admit, but hey, I’ve always been honest with you all.

I know that a decent chunk of my lack of motivation to read has to do with the holiday season and feeling frantic / stressed  for 29 days straight; BUT I would be lying if I didn’t admit that the lack of reading stems from me also finishing my Goodreads 2016 reading goal over a month ago.

I am a big planner, so I have not only been deliberating how many books are going to be on my Goodreads 2017 reading goal for the past two days weeks, but I have also been scouring the book blogging universe to find some other fun challenges to participate in!  I didn’t want to go toooooooo crazy in picking out a bunch of random challenges, but I did want to focus on discovery: whether that be new series, new authors, or new genres, I really want to focus on making 2017 new (rather than just another repetitive year).

So, the first challenge I picked out, I did so not only for it’s wide variety of prompts, but also because its super popular and I have always wanted to participate! The Pop Sugar 2017 Reading Challenge is pretty straightforward, but it still looks really fun.  There are definitely some prompts on here that will push me further than my own bookcase allows, which is really the whole point now isn’t it?  Plus, this graphic is gorgeous… now I just need to think of some efficient way to keep track of all these!  For anyone interested in learning more about the Pop Sugar 2017 Reading Challenge, click HERE!

While I have always considered myself a reader, I have almost rediscovered my love of books in the past three years.  And in that time period I have also embraced my love for the fantasy genre in general.  I used to think that reading and liking fantasy made me a weirdo, but now recalling those feelings of embarrassment make me so upset at my younger self.  There are no right or wrong ways to read a book.  There are only people who read and people who don’t: so, WHO CARES what they read as long as they do?

With that little rant out of the way, I am super pleased to say that I will also be participating in Flights of Fantasy Reading Challenge 2017 hosted by Alexa Loves Books!  flights-of-fantasy-badgeThis challenge is pretty simple in that you pick the number of fantasy books you want to read for the year and you… well, you read ’em.

There will be four read-a-longs throughout the year, as well as giveaways and monthly updates.  But what I am really most excited for, is discovering some awesome new fantasy series!  Of course, I will also be attempting to finish up some series that I already own and have been sitting on my shelf for far too long just lookin’ pretty.

My goal is going to be 25 fantasy books next year, so send some great fantasy suggestions my way!

I guess I will start to wrap this up before I venture into “ramble mode”, but I will still be setting a numbered goal for total books to read in 2017 on Goodreads.  I have deliberated over picking a number for two weeks, and I have finally settled on…..

Two years ago my goal was 40 books, and I read 65.  This year I made my goal 60 books, and I am at 74.  I think 75 is a comfortable number to push myself, but not so much that I am overwhelmed.  Plus, I really want to focus on quality next year, rather than quantity (big ass fantasy books here I come!)  Life is all about balance my friends!

Well, I think I have talked your face off enough for today, so how about you let me know in the comments which reading challenges (if any) you will be participating in for the new year.  2016 you are old news, 2017 we’re comin’ for ya!

  1. I’ve been thinking about which challenges I’m doing too along with my Goodreads. (I’m scaling back on my # this time around because I failed miserably 2 years in a row..) I’m also doing the PopSugar one! I liked 2016’s even though I didn’t do it, so I thought I’d give it a try this year– plus it has a LOT more diversity and reading outside my comfort zone than I’m used to, so yay challenge!

  2. You’ve read so many books, I’m so jealous, haha! I only started reading more in August and I set up my reading goal to 16 books because I’m pretty slow at reading – but now I’m at 18 and I’m kind of going faster than I have been in the past few months, haha!

As for reading challenges, I have never tried any before! They sound fun, though! I might go for a reading challenge with Diversity as its main theme 🙂
