I finished Strange the Dreamer two months ago, and I am still struggling to put my feelings into words. BUT. I think about this book all the time. Like, ALL THE TIME. I am borderline consumed with thoughts on what my precious Lazlo is up to, and how everything is going to play out in the next book.
So, since it has been on my mind for months now, I thought I should at least attempt to write a semi coherent review. Here goes nothing!
Strange the Dreamer was such an emotionally conflicting experience for me. Let me explain:
- The pacing is a little bit off. There were at least two or three times where I was a little bit bored with the lack of action BUT not really because the writing was just so phenomenal.
- There were a few times where I was kind of overall confused about what the plot was, and what was happening BUT AGAIN, I didn’t care that much because THE WRITING! *insert heart eye emojis here*
- I didn’t really like the POV switches, because I was so engrossed in what was happening with the other POV. And then this trend would continue indefinitely throughout the entire book.
- I wanted the book to end so I could find out what happened BUT I kind of never wanted it to end?!
Do you see my dilemma?
In general though, I thought Laini Taylor constructed not only some of the most unique characters I have ever encountered, but the setting was absolutely mesmerizing. I am entranced by Lazlo Strange, and I want to know everything about him.
Oh, and Thyron Nero.
And maybe all the other Godspawn too.
And obviously Weep. Obviously.
I am a fast reader, but as a warning, this is not a book you can sit down and binge. Or speed read. Or for that matter, would you even want to. Laini Taylor’s words were absolute magic, and I wanted to read this book forever (even if I desperately wanted to get to the end too).
Despite my earlier contradictory feelings, I still am rating Strange five stars. It is definitely one of my favorites of the year; Taylor’s words have wrapped themselves around me like honey and I cannot escape. And to be honest, I don’t really want to.
OH AND ONE LAST THING!
