DeerTales Holiday Gifting Guide!

If you’re like me, you started holiday shopping back in September.  But, if you are a normal, sane, and reasonable human being than it is about that time to start thinking about your holiday gifts.

I admit, I have almost zero chill when it comes to Christmas (which is what my family celebrates despite zero religious affiliation).  Then combine that with how large my family is, and I get a recipe of “plan early or go broke”.  I try to space everything out so that when the boyfriend and I actually head home for Christmas, we have some money to go get drinks with friends too.

Anyways, as time slips away I have found that it becomes harder and harder for me to think of gift ideas for all sorts of people in my life.  So, I have decided to help you all out a little bit this year!  Read on for DeerTales Gift Guide!*

*Note!  This is not bookish themed, it is a general gift guide with tons of ideas for all the different people in your life.

JORD Watches & A Little Story on Expanding Your Horizons

One of the greatest things about being savvy with social media, is the amazing opportunities and experiences you get to partake in that would have otherwise been out of reach.  For example, at this very moment, you are partaking in a little snippet of DeerTales history: you are currently reading my first promotional post. jord watch planner

How about a little back story for ya on how this came to be?

I was recently contacted by JORD Watches, asking me if I would like to participate in their Holiday Blogger Promotional Campaign.  Now, keep in mind, I don’t take book reviews, free products, or ‘rep’ positions lightly.  I swore to myself a year and a half ago when I started this social media adventure, that no matter what happened, I would always be genuine.  I would never sacrifice who I am, or lessen my opinions for anything I read or received.  Because after all, aren’t bad reviews just as valuable as good ones (if only for a completely different purpose…)

So, let’s take a journey back to two weeks ago.

Forest of a Thousand Lanterns: Wait this is a Villainous Retelling!?

forest of 1000 lanterns-1I first heard about Forest of a Thousand Lanterns at BookCon this year when I had the amazing opportunity to chat with Julie C. Dao at Penguin Teen breakfast.  I loved the idea of another fairy-tale retelling, and lord knows we need more diverse characters, so the  Far East setting was a huge turn on.

Unfortunately I think I may have missed the memo that this was the a retelling of Snow White’s Evil Queen, not Snow White herself and oh my… when I finally realized what I was reading, I was… concerned.

Down the TBR Hole: vol. 2!

Thought we should take another trip down the TBR hole today!

For those of you that have no idea what I am talking about, this is a blog meme created by Lia @ Lost in a Story that is basically this a post dedicated to cleaning out your Goodreads TBR.  So, you get to sort through books that you have just haphazardly thrown onto you virtual  you know you will never read and figuring out which ones you will actually read!

So, it works like this:

  • Head on over to your Goodreads to-read shelf
  • Sort the books by ascending date added
  • Take a closer look at the first 5 -10 books (How adventurous are ya feeling today?)
  • Read the synopses of the books (Oh I will be taking a good look at the covers too!)
  • Decide: should I keep it or should it go?

I did a mini purge almost two weeks ago and guys.  It is still out of control:

Why is it so much fun to add books on Goodreads!?

A Nosy Adventure; Let’s Talk Candles!

I was definitely all aboard the bookish candle hype train when the concept really took off.  A candle company would come out with a new variation of my favorite characters, or places from books, or just general bookish themed, and I snatched them up without a second thought. wickworms pyramid

Eventually my sister and I started our own bookish themed candle company called wickworms, and while it has been so much fun designing candles, it has really fueled the obsession.  But owning a business is hard, and while both of us have learned quite a few lessons on this journey, I have taken away two main points:

  1. I have picky fragrance tastes.  For example, any scent containing jasmine is a hard pass for me, same with gardenia or spearmint.  Sweet candles are also a miss for me, except very rarely a candle containing caramel scents will pique my interest.
  2. If I love a fandom hard enough, I find it necessary to adorn my shelves with every candle in existence from that fandom.

September Wrap-Up: The Month of New Releases

I had a pretty decent reading month in September, especially when you consider the size of some of the books that I finished!

I really tried to focus on new releases, since September was overflowing with them.  I had this grand plan and vision of keeping up with all the books that I had preordered, and unfortunately, that plan did not come to fruition.  But!  October, November, and December are sparse with the new releases that I am actually planning on reading, so hopefully I can use the time to catch up.

So, putting my nonsensical rambling aside, let me share with you the books that I completed in September!

One Dark Throne – Welcome to Fennbirn, Where Everyone Is Insane…

one dark throne-1One Dark Throne was in my top 5 most anticipated books of 2017, and after devouring it within a 6 hour time span, I can confidently say that it did not disappoint!

I am such a huge fan of this world that Kendare Blake has created, and while Fennbirn is not exactly a place I want to visit, I cannot help but be mesmerized by the island’s  unapologetically savage way of life.  I am fascinated by the Triplet Queens, their destinies, and the fact that not one person has ever said “hey, this whole concept is a little twisted dontcha think?”
